As far as I'm aware, my app is the only one that lets you only find the fastest wifi networks for your need. The all has a built in speed test when you are connected to a wifi network, and the app takes the average of all the tests.

I use the app Network Analyzer for this, and for analyzing right channels to choose, and other network issues/information. Works great. ... I use WiFi Sweetspots.

Fing and Net Analyzer are decent for finding other devices on the LAN and some basic network info. Apple's own Airport Utility is the only one I've seen that shows channel and signal strength of wifi networks.

This is the best - although you need a mac, and it is not open source, it is worth it. If you need open source, I can highly recommend wavemon, kismet ... Anyone stumbling on this now, you can get Intuibits Wi-Fi Explorer on Windows now.
