I cannot even begin to recommend this app enough, warning although it is not 'free' it is a one time purchase only game and does such an amazing job of teaching your kid to read disguised as a game!

I recommend Wanderful Storybooks. It's based off an old PC game, I used to play it when I was around 5 and it taught me so much. I loved the Hey Arthur stories and Stellaluna. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/wanderful-storybooks/id583696319

Apple Arcade has an app called Crayola Create and Play. If you already have an arcade subscription or of the other plans that includes it, this is totally free and totally worth it. Watching him learn shapes several months ago just from playing this game and matching was crazy.
