With the roku app you can select channels directly. Its also via wifi so if you have a remote that requires being pointed at a senor the app will not.

They work well enough, but IR only. If I had it to do over again, I would have just bought direct from Roku. They cost a few more dollars (unless you catch them on sale) but worth it to have full functionality.
