What Reddit Says About Rock Identifier Apps

Maybe one of the pay for it ones can work. I have tried numerous others and so far not one could correctly identified any rocks or minerals. I collect rocks and stones and know a lot of the actual names and personally think the apps on the systems are absolutely rubbish.

None seem very useful. I prefer Rockd app to look at maps and get a sense of what I might find in an area.

Mohs hardness tests, acid (vinegar or HCl) test, and streak tests are the best to start with, as they are very easy to learn and do with stuff around the house (actual tools do help a lot tho) and will narrow lots of options down.

The applications out there are not very good and are limited by the plethora of rock types. To make things worse, many igneous rocks require laboratory analysis to further pinpoint identification.

Download the Rockd app. It’s free and has a lot of great information. You can see your location on a geologic map and tap to get rock descriptions, articles, etc. Fossils of Ohio is a great book.

There are no apps for the identification of rocks, minerals, plants, mushrooms, clouds or Rorschach blots that are especially capable.
