I’ve used 3rdPlanIt extensively for many years and was one of the beta tester and contributor. It allows you to do 2d and 3d layouts and put them to run in the computer. Running trains in your 3d layout is a great way to check for issues like thigh corners or clearance.

Usually I use the EngineDriver app on my phone as the throttle. Setting up DCC-EX needs a PC to either run the installer or use Arduino IDE to load the software manually. JMRI can be useful too, if a bit overwhelming in capability.
