All have been very hit or miss for me depending on location/state. I've found some okay last minute deals with the Hopper app which I've booked on maybe 3 or so times. Kayak is my usual go-to and I've heard of Hotel Tonight but haven't used it yet.

I was trying to manually check the price of the hotels I had booked every couple of days but it was too time consuming. I would recommend that if the hotel offers free cancellation until close to checkin, then book it early to lock in a decent rate; then monitor it and re-book as the price drops.

If it’s slow season I may book a night to check the place out and then ask the owner for an extended stay price if I pay in cash. I treat the apps as search engines and price comparison first. Rates are not $19 for a Saturday night at any hotel. Google will show that. Booking and Expedia are pretty comparable to the hotel unless you have an account. Most times mobile rates are best.
