I love the app Tody. You can set how frequently chores need to be done (everyday, every 2 days, every 50 days, etc.). You can mark when they're done and it will tell you how many days they're overdue.

Remember the Milk, and TODO apps from MS/Apple/Google are the only ones I've ever found to be useful for general use. Markdown ToDos are good too, but only if it's for personal use. ... If you like to gamify your chores go for it.
