I plan to teach math online using digital pen/tablet Wacom Intuoso, involving lots of handwritten math symbols. Almost all apps feature only marker, but I prefer calligraphy pen because my writing thus looks so much more beautiful.

hey there! why to go for software? learn by practicing as I did. There are hundreds of affordable lettering books on Amazon that teaches you lettering. different fonts and calligraphy. I learnt some from this amazing book which is friendly on pocket too. For your interest sharing the link here.

Not sure about free apps, but Affinity Designer with calligraphy brushes would probably do what you want.

If you're into Asian calligraphy, Zen Brush 2 has a fairly accurate physical brush model. Speed could be improved, but workable for real Asian calligraphy. It's not free, but it's not as expensive as Procreate.

Not automated like caligraphr. But there are plenty of open source, free and paid apps for creating fonts where imo https://www.fontself.com/ would be the best option for you. It requires Illustrator or Photoshop as well.
