I’m using both of these, mostly because I grew up with an Audubon Field Guide to Birds always in my backpack, and the Audubon app lets me upload my own photos of the birds I see. Merlin’s audio ID feature is also an incredible tool.

Aside from the ebird & merlin app. I also recommend a field guide. Not sure what area you live in, but for example, I bought the Minnesota Field Guide for Birds for my area which helps with learning a bit about the birds here.

That’s my struggle with Merlin and eBird. I have been birding since I was a kid, and I don’t remember the exact location and date I saw the birds I saw. There’s no complete (digital) copy of my life list anywhere because of this, and it’s too many birds to physically write down anywhere.

Hi all, I'm looking for an alternative app to My Birds, something more orientated to the pet keeper, instead of a breeder. Any recommendations would be great, though ideally android over IOS apps and it must be free, I don't feel like spending ...

I like eBird because of all the metrics that it tracks which the Audubon app doesn't appear to, and because it feels like I'm actually contributing to something. On the flip side, I don't like that it necessarily requires a second app for identification (Merlin), and also as a new bir...

I love the app- I’ve been using it since April 2024 and today I counted my 77th unique bird ID … (I live in a rather unique area…- my home is surrounded by town conservation land plus we have a brackish river one block west, and the Atlantic Ocean (Nantucket sound) a few blocks away.

Merlin Bird ID is the one I use.

Merlin for ID help is goated. Also it’s completely free. EBird is the best for the lists. I like iNaturalist for getting a feel of the best spots to look for certain species ... I use Birda.

Was only asking since I've got no familiarity with it and for clarification since, to my understanding, eBird does pretty much all that stuff too (though, I suppose some of it is mostly handled on the web rather than in app). Cheers! ... Oh, sorry; I find eBird much less intuitive/more clunky. ...

I use Birda for the photo bird id and social aspect and Merlin for sound id ... Merlin and eBird as previously suggested, but I like iBird as well. iBird moved to a subscription model which sucks, but it has a lot of good full-color illustrations ...

It's a little time investment to use but...it's so powerful and it does all the things you reference here, and lots more. ... I've never used it so I can't attest to the details you're looking for but iBird Journal is a popular list-keeping app.

As already said Merlin and ebird are very good together. I also recommend birda - I think of it as like a birding social media kind of · What birding apps do you use/recommend?

No quiz functions that I'm aware of, but the Audubon and Merlin bird apps both are free and packed with features

Just signed up for the Birda Plus actually. Not sure what more I get but I like the app and want to pay the developer for it. ... Ok so I just tried it and I think I'll start using this!

Plus you can download only what you need or everything under the sun. And, as others have mentioned, it’s free. If you’re looking for illustrations it’s definitely not the app for you, but it’s basically replaced every other birding app for me, esp while traveling.

Presumably you want to import your sounds into the app rather than record them real-time? Kvitteromat is very popular in Sweden but you can't import sounds. ... Exactly! But if there is no software with importing, I will do it with live recording :) thank you! More replies ... BirdNerd works ar...

This! These are the three bird apps that I use, myself. I love Merlin for sound assist but I have used iBird for a long time as my online ID guide and I love it- I like the search options it has available to narrow things down.

if you can capture the call w/ Merlin you’ve saved yourself a bundle.(Merlin is a phone app released by Cornell University. Its free and very good. I got a birdfy from my son for Xmas, but it’s still hard differentiating the 17 warblers in my state.
