I was checking out some alternative apps, and the most popular ones seem to be Alarmy, and Alarm Clock for Me. However, from reading the critical reviews, these have issues as well.

Tbh I gave up on those and just use Sleep as Android now. It’s not perfect but way more reliable for me. Also heard good things about Alarm Clock Xtreme, might be worth a shot.

I switched to Challenges Alarm Clock, which doesn't have the QR code functionality but has a variety of challenges that you can set up to force you to wake up.

Alarmy. The best alarm clock app ever. Once you set a alarm lets says 5 AM. if you are someone who has trouble waking up, yiu can select activities to do. The alarm will only stop if you complete the activities you set.

I’ve been in the same boat after the Google Clock update. Awake (Android) has been my go‑to. The core app is free and ad‑free, you can disable snooze and it offers large dismiss buttons with gradual volume so waking up feels less jarring.

I use Alarmy and have had a similar experience to you but there is one thing you can check to use what you used to have. I am on iOs so unsure it will work but it is worth a try.
