Your First Screenshot
Is Everything
72% of users never swipe past screenshot 1. How to make it count: the hero shot formula, what top apps do differently, and common mistakes.
The 72% Rule
72% of App Store visitors make their download decision based on what they see without scrolling. That means your first screenshot — and often ONLY your first screenshot — determines whether someone downloads your app.
This isn't about making a "good" first screenshot. It's about making one so compelling that the download decision is already 80% made before they swipe.
The Hero Shot Formula
3 Elements, Every Time
1. A benefit-driven headline (what the user gets, not what the app does)
2. Your best UI screen (the moment that makes people say "I want that")
3. A background that creates contrast (gradient, solid, or lifestyle — never white)
What Top Apps Show in Screenshot #1
- Fitness apps: Active workout in progress with impressive metrics visible
- Finance apps: Portfolio/budget dashboard with healthy-looking numbers
- Social apps: Populated feed showing the social experience
- Productivity apps: The "aha" feature — the one thing that makes you different
- Games: Actual gameplay (not loading screen, not menu)
- Education: Interactive lesson that looks fun, not homework
The 3-Second Test
Show your first screenshot to someone for 3 seconds, then hide it. Ask them:
- What does this app do?
- Who is it for?
- Would you download it?
If they can't answer all three, your screenshot needs work. If they answer "yes" to #3, you're ready to ship.
